A halving cuts the block reward in half. It happens every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years, and is built into the bitcoin protocol.
When is the next halving?
The next halving will happen at block 1,050,000. The reward will drop from 3.125 to 1.5625 BTC. The estimated date is based on the current block height and an average block time of 10 minutes.
How does the halving affect miners?
After a halving each terahash earns half as many coins. That is why the most energy-efficient ASICs stay profitable longer.
